Resistance Was Futile: How Irene Finally Gave In

it was truly amazingThe Warrior Race will challenge you in the best way and leave you feeling stronger than before. For Irene, a 52-year-old short-distance trail runner and open-water swimmer, the #1 Cradle Warrior Race was exactly that.

For years, Irene’s son had been trying to recruit the family for a Warrior Race. Each time, she found a perfect excuse to say no until he made an offer she couldn’t refuse. Paying toward her entry fee (and no more room for excuses), she finally caved.

“He wore me down! After years of persuasion, I had no choice but to sign up. And, honestly? I should’ve said yes sooner! I was nervous at first, but the moment I stepped onto that course, I knew I had made the right decision. The teamwork, the adrenaline, and the sheer joy of pushing myself, it was truly amazing.

Alongside her two daughters, she took on the Commando Course, and to her surprise, absolutely loved it.

The Challenge and the Camaraderie

The Challenge and the Camaraderie

The race tested her strength, but more importantly, it reminded her of the power of teamwork and the importance of resilience. With her son guiding her through each obstacle and offering support when needed, Irene found herself embracing the experience with excitement.

“My son informed us about each obstacle as we approached them, and he had a good instinct as to when I would need help with a foot-up, someone to stand below me for moral support, or some shoulders to sit on to get across the monkey bars. Some of the obstacles had been modified from previous events to make them a little more accessible, and I appreciated this. I also took it slowly over the high obstacles, which didn’t have a net (since I am sometimes scared of heights), and was thankful for the medics who were visible. The encouragement from my family and fellow warriors kept me going. I took my time on the high obstacles, but the energy around me was incredible. My favourite obstacle was the Mamba – it brought back happy memories of super-tubes, which I have always loved. The whole course conjured up happy memories for me from school adventure camps, where the obstacle courses were always my favourite activity.”

A Lesson in Strength and Adventure

A Lesson in Strength and Adventure

For Irene, crossing the finish line wasn’t just about completing the course; it was about proving to herself what she was capable of.

“The Warrior Race took me out of my comfort zone in a positive way. What would I do differently next time? I would be quicker to sign up, and sure to encourage others to join me. I don’t think I’ll realistically ever be able to complete the monkey bars without help, but that’s what makes being able to compete as a team so special. I’ll leave the competitive individual races for the younger folk – but come on (older) ladies, let’s see more of you participating next time!”
